What is psychotherapy?

The goal is to establish a relationship in which the patient can feel free to express personal thoughts and emotions and thus gain the understanding necessary for change.

L.C.S.W.-C. – Licensed Certified Social Worker – Clinical in Maryland 

LICSW - Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Washington, DC

LCSW - Licensed Certified Social Worker in Maryland

LGSW - Licensed Graduate Social Worker

LPC - Licensed Professional Counselor

MFT - Marriage and Family Therapist

What ​are the Continuing Education requirements for Washington, DC?


LICSWs, LISWs, LGSWs, and LSWAs: Required 40 hours every two year licensing period, 12 of which may be taken by independent home study.

A minimum of 6 of the 40 hours must be in ethics (must be face to face) and 3 of the 40 hours must be in HIV/AIDs.


LPC: LPCs: Required 40 hours every two year licensing period, all of which may be taken by home study. A minimum of 6 of the 40 hours must be in ethics and 4 in trauma counseling every two year licensing period.

MFTs: Required 30 hours every two year licensing period, 15 of which may be taken by home study.


Psychologists and Psychology Associates: Required 30 hours every two year licensing period, 15 of which may be taken by home study. A minimum of 3 of the 30 hours must be in ethics or risk liability and 3 in cultural competence every two year licensing period.


What are the Continuing Education requirements for Maryland?


LCSWs, LGSWs, LSWs, and LCSWs-C: Required 40 hours every two year licensing period, 20 of which may be taken online, excluding 3 hours in ethics. A minimum of 3 of the 40 hours must be in ethics every two year licensing period.

LSWA: Required 30 hours every two year licensing period, 15 of which may be taken online, excluding 3 hours in ethics.

A minimum of 3 of the 30 hours must be in ethics every two year licensing period.


LCPCs, LGPCs, LCMFTs, and LGMFTs: Required 40 hours every two year licensing period, 10 of which may be taken by distance learning.


Psychologists: Required 40 hours every two year licensing period, 20 of which may be taken by independent study. A minimum of 3 of the 40 hours must be in laws pertaining to the practice of psychology, ethics or risk management, and 3 in cultural diversity every two year licensing period.
